1957 Dodge "Penny" build thread
So my truck is not done but its not rough either i have never made a build thread to I thought of making one here, so I will post build photos up to now and then go from there.
Her name is Penny I named it because she was copper when I bought it back in 2008. I bought it from a man named Bob who owns a shop in Prescott, AZ. here the story on it; so one day back around 2006 I owned a 68 barracuda and needed parts, so I went to a popular junk yard called Desert valley auto, Parts in north PHX. I saw two 57's there a sweptside and a stepside one in front of the other and I never thought of owning a 50's truck but I fell in love the first time I saw the style of the trucks. I did not have the money at the time to buy them, so I left...months went by and I went back with enough money to buy them, and they had already been sold...I was so sad.
I went back to my house in Prescott, AZ and a couple months went buy and I got a lead from my dad who was keeping an eye out for these trucks he saw two 1) first 57 was a salmon pinkish color and white two tone it was sitting in a RV storage lot with the tires rotting off (its still sitting there to this day) and another looked to be a running copper colored truck on the other side of town, both were step side short beds. I really liked the salmon colored one and got ahold of the people who owned the storage lot, they gave me the phone number to the owners of the salmon colored truck, a woman I talked to said it was her dads who had died years back and they were waiting to bring it back east where she lived and that it wasnt for sale.
Again I was so sad...My wife said what about the other copper truck? And I had completely got so caught up on the Salmon colored 57 I forgot about the copper one! So I went over to Car Care by Bob a automotive repair shop that housed the 57 in its parking lot. I went in side and asked who the owner was and a technician said It was the shops owner Bob's truck. and he said Bob was not there and did not know when he would be in.
So again i left with no 57... a few weeks later I was in the area and Decided to stop by Again... and Bob was there, he mentioned he and his wife were talking about selling it the night before in bed, the problem was he had two pickups a 30's (I believe) Ford, that was in his family forever, and the Dodge which he like better but had no sentimental hold on. He said he did not want to sell it to some kid who wanted to butcher it and throw it away, after talking for a hour or so about the truck he shot me a price which was really high to me, so I told him I would see what I could come up with.
I went to the bank and pulled out a grand less than he was asking in cash and with cash in hand we struck a deal and I was the proud owner of a copper 57 Stepside Dodge small window 2wd D100. while I waited for the tow truck to arrive Bob told me he had acquired the truck a few years earlier, off of Ebay, he and his grandson Justin (who owns a really nice award winning Custom 55 Chrysler with a hemi) went to Compton Ca, and he said a austrailian man who worked at a mercedes dealer ship was the previous owner. other than that I know nothing about the history of the truck.
The towtruck came and towed it about 20 miles down the highway to my dads house. I cleaned the bed out ( it was full of dead leaves almost to the top and I found a pair of leg burner side pipes that had been ripped off the truck and thrown in the back, also found a newer metal Sign of a 2nd Gen dodge viper (that I still have hanging on my wall)
My dad asked me if I was going to name her. I had never thought of naming my truck a few thing came to mind but I liked Penny because of the color which had probabily been painted in the 70's or 80's, it was a poor paint job that covered the factory "BayView Green" which was a very dark hunter green color. When I ripped the seat out I found a old pair of under wear and a penny that was stuck between the floor board and the seat frame, it had been bolted in there on purpose. the penny was so covered in dirt i was about to throw it away when i decided at the last minute to wash it off with some parts cleaner that was next to me, it shinned right up and read 1957 I WAS A SIGN!!!! So from this moment on she became "PENNY"
